Oldland Mill Trust are looking for volunteers with a paint brush!

If you have any time spare on a week day between the 13th May and the 14th June of this year then we'd love to hear from you.

We are re-furbishing two of the sweeps on Oldland Mill over this period and need volunteers to help paint them. You can join us for as little or as long as you want.

No experience of Windmills is necessary; all the work is at ground level and all training and materials will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to help keep a local landmark in use as well as a way of meeting new people and work with a great team of dedicated volunteers.

If you are able to help or want to know more then please contact Jim Watkin by email at jim.watkin96@gmail.com or telephone 01273 842254

New Woodturning Club

New Woodturning Club

Following appearing in the BBC's 'Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution' with his wood
turned clown called Geronimo, Chris Grace and a group of like minded individuals
from East and West Sussex are establishing a new Woodturning Club in Portslade.
This epitomises the ethos behind the programme, to encourage more people to take up a
craft, and help to secure the future of our traditional activities.

With the growing popularity of crafts there is clearly a need for a Club in this area and
we will hold monthly meetings in Portslade Town Hall with a range of activities which
will be membership led. These will include:

Practical sessions where members can exchange ideas and tips
Demonstrations of specific techniques & skills
Competitions designed to encourage exploration of new ideas
and many more...

The idea is to provide people with a forum to discuss ideas and learn from each other
in addition to the obvious social benefits. Our aim is to provide a Club where initially
people can learn the basics and improve their technique. Then for those who want to
take their craft to a new level we will provide the stimulus and the facility for collective
problem solving, enabling members to explore different artistic directions.

The Club will meet between 7pm and 10pm on the first Thursday of each month at
Portslade Town Hall from the 7th of February 2013.

Everyone is welcome to come along and see what we do, prospective members are
encouraged to attend a meeting to see if it is for them before joining. Woodturning is
something almost anyone can enjoy and there are virtually no barriers to people taking
up the hobby. Lathes and the other necessary tools are comparatively
inexpensive, and can take up relatively little space, so you don't need
a huge workshop or wallet to get involved. People from all walks of life,
all ages and any background can quickly learn to turn interesting objects made from wood.
A number of our members sell their work, and some demonstrate their craft to others.

Junior members are welcome, however due to the nature of the activities, they must be
accompanied by an adult until the age of 18.

Hassocks Amenity Association Save Lag Wood Update

Auction result:   Sold for £122,000.   Hassocks Amenity Association had raised £90,000, so we were unsuccessful in obtaining the wood and the 'pheasant's field'.  The good news is that we have met the new owners who live in Brighton.  They told us that they were committed to keeping Lag Wood as it is, and the public would continue to have access. They would like to meet the groups who use the wood, and we will be arranging a meeting in due course.  So, although disappointed, HAA is not despondent – and how many villages are there that could raise £90,000 in eight days?

Help Save Lag Wood

SAVE LAGG WOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY

URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Lag Wood will be auctioned on Tuesday morning (30th October).  This is a last ditch attempt to enable everyone to continue to access this ancient, protected woodland with its unique chalk stream.   Hassocks children have played there for generations.  In the Spring, the wild flowers are breathtaking. For walkers, it's a popular short local stroll.

The guide price is £80,000 to £100,000. The first £10,000 has already been raised through HAA members. We need at least contributions of another £70,000 to make a serious bid.

For details of ways to contribute and more information, contact immediately
